Project [THING] was thought up last year, I was thinking about what I could follow up my last build D33P THOUGHT with. There were two ideas that I really liked (one still secret) and this one with the hand. It originally was going to be a water cooled mini ITX build. Projects get very expensive, very fast, so apart from the idea it didn't get off the ground (I don't like leaving things unfinished).
So when I read about the Raspberry Pi competition it was the perfect opportunity to get another build out there and have it costing very little. Also the Raspberry Pi is so small it would make the build relatively simple.
I did struggle with the overall design and I changed my mind a few times about what the final cover would look like. I had an old 40mm fan in my box-a-bits and I wanted to use that as it would add some light and colour to the build. In the end I went for a grill type arrangement as it would allow the hardware to be visible and it would give the project a nice modern feel about it.
I'm very happy about how the hand turned out, I have never done any carving before and when I first picked up the chisel, my first thoughts were "oh no I've bitten off more than I can chew" but once I got going with the Dremel it got very easy and it was a joy to do.
The end result is very different and a complete break from what PC's look like, yeah I know it's not quite a PC but this design could easily be incorporated into a SFF build.
